Murals on Main Street

The Greater Cornwall Chamber of Commerce Request for Proposals (RFP) from experienced muralists or artist teams interested in creating a unique, large-scale mural that celebrates our town’s history, natural beauty, and community spirit. The selected artist(s) will be responsible for the development and execution of the mural, which will be prominently displayed on the exterior of the building at 315 Main Street in Cornwall, NY.

Project Background and Objectives:

Cornwall is rich in history, natural beauty, and community. Our aim is to celebrate these three essential components in a single, captivating mural. It will serve as a beacon of pride for our residents and a cultural landmark for visitors.

Scope of Work:

The artist(s) will:

  • Consult with the Chamber to gain an understanding of the town’s history and its significance to the mural.
  • Create an original design that communicates Cornwall’s history, natural beauty, and vibrant community.
  • There are 3 parts to the project –
  1. Four window panels facing Main Street – Develop concept for exterior installation of panels that may be switched out seasonally
  2. Building surface heading into town from the traffic circle
  3. Building surface facing Union Street
  • Make appearances for fund raising efforts.
  • Prepare the selected building surface for the mural.
  • Execute the panel installation and murals within the agreed-upon time frame.
  • Participate in public unveilings or other community events related to the mural.

Proposal Submission Guidelines:

Submissions should include:

  • Detailed written proposal and concept for the mural, explaining the artistic vision.
  • Preliminary sketch or digital representation of the proposed mural.
  • Estimated timeline for completing the project. Should be split into 3 stages for each project part.
  • Detailed budget outlining costs for design, materials, labor, insurance, and any other related expenses. Should be split into three budgets, one for each project part.
  • Examples of previous work, particularly prior murals or large-scale artwork.
  • Current resume or CV, highlighting experience with similar projects.
  • References from previous commissions or art-related work.

Evaluation Criteria:

Proposals will be reviewed based on the following criteria:

  • Artistic merit and originality of the concept.
  • Understanding and incorporation of Cornwall’s history, natural beauty, and community into the proposed design.
  • Feasibility of executing the mural within the proposed budget and timeline.

Previous experience with similar projects and references.

Deadline for Submissions:

All proposals must be received by July 31st, 2023. Late submissions will not be considered.

Release Statement:

By participating in the Murals on Main Street Project, you hereby grant an irrevocable license to GCCC to the art and images produced, which GCCC may use or share on social media or use in printed materials at no cost to GCCC.

Additional Information:

The selected artist(s) will need to comply with all local and state laws and regulations relating to the execution of the mural and the safety of the public. A contract will be signed to outline responsibilities, compensation, and other project details.
